Cleveland, OH (WBAP/KLIF) – Federal officials in Cleveland, Ohio say a planned 4th of July terrorist attack has been thwarted.
The alleged suspect, Demetrius Pitts, is charged with attempted material support of a foreign terrorist organization. Pitts had pledged an allegiance to Al Quaida and revealed in undercover conversations to FBI agents his desire to kill military personnel and federal agents.
Over the course of several months, Pitts also allegedly expressed a desire to blow up a van full of explosives in downtown Cleveland, and had planned a similar attack in his native Philadelphia at a later date.
FBI Special Agent Steven Anthony said, during a morning press conference that Pitts is an American citizen who was radicalized in the United States.
Authorities were alerted to Pitts due to his comments on social media.
