Mesquite Urges Residents to “Celebrate Safely with Friends and Family, Not Fireworks”

Mesquite officials confiscated 725 pounds of illegal fireworks in 2017.

MESQUITE (WBAP/KLIF News) – Residents of Mesquite are on notice this 4th of July holiday.

The City of Mesquite’s Wayne Larson said officials have rolled out it’s “Celebrate Safely with Friends and Family, Not Fireworks” initiative.

“We aggressively enforce the no fireworks and no celebratory gunfire laws in our community. This is in direct result of citizens issuing concerns to our city council,” he said.

Last year, the campaign helped get a large portion of illegal fireworks out of the community.

“Just last Independence Day holiday we actually confiscated more than 700 pounds of fireworks because of that campaign and officers and firefighters going out in tandem to survey the community,” he said.

Signs about the initiative have been posted throughout the city.

Anyone, including visitors of Mesquite, caught violating the policy could face an up to $4,000 fine or jail time.
