Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – Activists in Dallas say they’ve gathered enough signatures to give voters the opportunity in November to force companies to give paid sick leave to all of its employees.

The Dallas Morning News reports, the Workers Defense Project has over 100-thousand signatures to allow voters to decide whether private companies should be required to offer paid sick leave.

The initiative is aimed at helping service workers.

Organizers say service workers are the “people who prepare our food, care for us and provide vital services; and, who are forced to choose between taking a pay cut or going to work sick.”

Our Scott Sidway talked to a Dallas man who manages a service company, who said employers shouldn’t be ordered how to structure their time off saying, “It’s my company, if you don’t want to work here go find somewhere else.”

Employers are expected to push back against the cost.

The proposal calls for a maximum of 6 to 8 paid sick days per year, depending on the size of the company. For every 30 hours worked, employees would earn one hour of paid sick time.
