Kids Escape Injury in Gunfire with Garland Police

A 30 year old Garland man is hospitalized with two gunshots and two children are safe after police gunfire and a mile long car chase Friday night.

Garland police say two officers were sitting in traffic at West Miller and Saturn Road, when an SUV crashed through a fence, striking a tombstone in a cemetery.  Police say the suspect driver began driving toward the officers who got out of their vehicle to investigate, and they opened fire.

A chase ensued about a mile in distance, ending in the 2600 block of South Garland Avenue.  Police say they took 30 year old Thomas Christopher Irwin into custody, and then noticed a 4 and an 11 year old child in the suspect’s car.  The kids were not injured; Irwin was transported to an area hospital with what are described as two gunshots; non life threatening injuries.

Investigation is underway.  The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave while a review of the case takes place.
