First Positive Sample of West Nile Virus Confirmed in Irving

DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas County is reporting its first positive test sample for the West Nile Virus of the season.

It came from the Irving zip code of 75062.

Renee Crutchfield is with the County’s Health Department and said now is the time for residents to start being pro-active in preventing the spread of the disease.

“Whenever your outside, use insect repellent that contains DEET. Remember to drain all areas of water in and around your home,” she said.

She said positive tests have come as early as April in the past.

The earlier those type of results come in have a direct impact on the number of North Texans who contract the disease.

Crutchfield said thankfully, no one has contracted the disease yet.

“We have not have any confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus. So, at this time we’re urging residents to use the 4 D’s to reduce exposure,” she said.

Last year, 26 people in Dallas County contracted the virus. Two people died from the disease.
