AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – Five months ahead of the midterm elections a new Quinnipiac Poll shows incumbent Texas Governor Greg Abbott with a 19 point lead over his Democratic challenger, Lupe Valdez.
The survey of 961 Texas voters conducted May 23-29 found Abbott leading the former Dallas County Sheriff by a margin of 53-34 percent. Men prefer Abbott 58-28 percent; women support the governor 48-40 percent.
Valdez holds a large margin of support among black voters, 66-21 percent. It’s much closer with Latino voters, 43 percent supporting Valdez and 39 percent for Abbott.
Overall, 60 percent of Texans approve of the job Governor Abbott is doing. 53 percent of those responding to the poll indicated they don’t know enough about Lupe Valdez to form an opinion.
The same poll found incumbent Senator Ted Cruz jumping out to a double-digit lead over Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke. 50 percent of those polled support Cruz with 39 percent favoring O’Rourke. In Quinnipiac’s previous poll taken in early April, Cruz held just a 3 percentage point advantage over O’Rourke.
The poll has a 3.8 percent margin of error.
