DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez reportedly owes more than $12,000 in back taxes on six properties in Dallas County and one in Ellis County. The Houston Chronicle reports she actually owns a total of eight Dallas County properties and that her candidate financial disclosure report failed to note one of them.
According to the Dallas Morning News Valdez campaign spokesman Juan Bautista Dominguez blames the property tax system, which he says is filled with errors. Dominguez also blames Valdez’s opponent in the upcoming gubernatorial election, incumbent Greg Abbott, for “failed leadership”.
Dominguez did admit that Valdez owes the money, saying Valdez “has an agreement with the counties to pay off 2017 property taxes and plans to do so entirely in the coming months.”
Tuesday Valdez became the first Hispanic female and first openly gay person to win a major party’s gubernatorial nomination in Texas.
