SEAGOVILLE (WBAP/KLIF) – Senator John Cornyn and White House Senior Advisor Jared Kushner are working together to push prison reform legislation.
The Senator and the President’s son-in-law spoke with inmates of a Texas prison Friday about impacts the ‘First Step Act’ could have on prisoners. Cornyn visited the Federal Corrections institute in Seagoville and discussed the impacts rehab programs could have for low risk offenders. He says the goal is to reduce the overall crime rate.
“I hate to say this but we’re not going to save every body,” said Senator Cornyn. “The high risk offenders are the best people for these types of programs.”
The bill is intended to expand recidivism reduction programming, help prisons partner with faith-based and community-based organizations, allow certain inmates to earn credit toward time in pre-release custody, and improve correctional officer training.
Kushner attended the meeting by phone after missing his flight to Texas.
