FORT WORTH  (WBAP/KLIF) – The City of Fort Worth confirmed that its Human Relations Unit is investigating a popular night spot amid allegations of racial discrimination.

Varsity Tavern is under fire after a complaint by a former Fort Worth resident who alleges that the establishment is using a dress code to deny entry to minorities.

Last month, Sam Sayed told the Star-Telegram that while on break from graduate school at Drexel University in Philadelphia, he and some friends went to the bar in the West 7th area.

He said one of his friends, Stephen, who is African-American was turned away because Jordan sneakers.

After the group left, Sayed said Stephen and another friend, who is white, switched shoes and tried to get in again.

The white man wearing Jordan’s got in and Stephen, who wore his friends Sperrys, a popular boat shoe, was eventually let in.

Once inside the pair switched the shoes back. Sayed said Stephen was immediately approached by a bouncer who asked how he got in wearing Jordan’s and were asked to leave.

Varsity Tavern issued a statement that read in part:

“Racial discrimination is something we, as a diverse family ourselves, take very seriously and absolutely do not tolerate or condone,” it read.

The company said its also investigating the situation.
