EVERMAN (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Red Cross is encouraging North Texans to take advantage of their ‘Sound the Alarm’ campaign the raise awareness about home fire safety.
The organization is installing over 100,000 free smoke alarms in 100 cities nationwide and will be in Everman this weekend.
Lisa Morgan said most residents don’t know that when a fire breaks out in their home, they have less than two minutes to get out safely.
“The smoke alarm is the first alarm or signal that anyone gets to let them know that there is a fire in their house so they can avoid injuries and loss of life,” she said.
The idea for the campaign was born after the organization’s national office did a recent study, which showed a disturbing trend.
“Our national office had done a lot of extensive research and noticed a trending up prior to starting this campaign in the number of injuries and fatalities that were occurring in home fires,” she said.
Not only will residents receive free smoke alarms, they’ll also be educated on house fire safety prevention tips.
Morgan said adopting a few simple habits could save lives.
“Twice a year when you Fall back and Spring forward make sure you check those smoke alarms. Make sure the batteries are working. Switch them out if they’re not working,” she said.
