DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — The news that America’s Team and its fans have been dreading has broken:

Jason Witten is retiring from the NFL.

After 15 years and a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame, Witten is an 11 time Pro Bowler with 1,152 career catches for 12,448 yards and 68 touchdowns. He holds all time records as a tight end and is fourth in all-time pass receptions.

The NFL reports Witten’s tough decision became final this morning when he told the Cowboys brass he couldn’t walk away from an offer to be lead analyst for ESPN’s Monday Night Football. Witten will replace Joe Gruden, who has returned to coaching, and will reportedly be teamed in the broadcast booth with long time college analyst Joe Tessitore.

Witten lives in Westlake with his wife, Michele, and their four children. The Wittens are very close to former Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo and his wife, Candace. Romo retired last season to become a star NFL analyst for CBS.
