Dallas County Trial Begins in Lawsuit Alleging Discrimination Against White Voters

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – A trial stemming from a lawsuit alleging that Dallas County discriminates against white voters has begun.

Lawyers for four plaintiffs are trying to prove that Dallas County commissioners approved 2011 boundaries that “intentionally” discriminated against white voters.  The Dallas Morning News reports, the plaintiffs, led by Ann Harding, say white voters were “cracked”  and then “packed” into one district.

Harding lives in a district represented by Democrat Elba Garcia. She says she would like the opportunity to vote for a moderate Republican. The plaitiffs want the lines redrawn, and to be given a chance to vote again.

They are seeking protections under the Voting Rights Act.  The case is believed to be the first in the country in which white voters are suing for protection under the landmark civil rights era law.
