Thousands Are Expected to Volunteer at Plano’s Annual Citywide Cleanup

PLANO  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Thousands of North Texans will be picking up litter in Plano on Saturday as part of the Great American Cleanup.

Monica Sowards said keeping the city clean has numerous benefits.

“It helps increase our property value, it helps keep our communities beautiful and it’s just really important to keep those things off of our streets, in our communities and our waterways,” she said.

If left unattended, the trash eventually ends up in our water systems.

“It ends up in our storm drains which leads directly into our creeks, lakes, rivers and ultimately into our oceans,” said Sowards.

Once it gets into the ocean, the litter has a devastating impact on the ecosystem.

“Animals and wildlife can get entangled or ingest it. It can cause fatalities,” said Sowards.

It’s a program that has proven to be popular across the city which has participated in the cleanup since 1983.

Last year, volunteers collected 972 bags of trash weighing 10 tons.

She said the number of volunteers increased 25 %  in the past year alone.

The clean up last from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

There will be a beach party afterwards from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Chase Oaks Church parking lot at 281 Legacy Drive.
