New Trend: Harris County DA Charges 3 People Who Gave Alcohol to Minor Involved in Fatal Crash

Harris County, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – The first charges have been filed in Harris County in connection with a new initiative that targets people who provide alcohol to others in alcohol related cases.

A bartender and two others are charged for giving alcohol to a minor who was later involved in a high-speed crash that killed a Galveston mother and her 3-year old child.

The arrests are part of a new task force which targets “providers.”

During a press conference Harris County DA Kim Ogg said, “No excuse” for bar employees to serve minors.”

Harris County leads the nation in the number of DUI crashes according to the lates stats, at 2,941. Dallas County is second.

Ron Sylvan, Regional Executive Director of MADD North Texas, says that while the concept of going after those who provide alcohol to others who are later involved in crashed is not new, he applauds Harris County law enforcement who have made it a priority.

“Drunk driving is a serious thing and needs to be treated that way and when DA’s and PD’s start focusing more on these crimes, which appears to be the case in Houston, I think it’s a great thing and we need to continue to move in that direction.”

Police say 20-year old Victoria Rivas was driving 90-mph when she slammed into a car, causing the fatal crash.
