DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Dallas Police Department laid out its plans to keep residents safe at the city council meeting Monday afternoon.
Chief Renee Hall said crime has gone down significantly when compared to this time last year.
“We’re looking an overall 9.3 % reduction in crime, 25 % reduction in murders, 6.3 % reduction in property crime and an overall violent crime of 21.4 percent,” she said.
Hall said the department’s strategic priorities include reducing crime further, improving community engagement and boosting recruitment numbers.
Officer retention has been a source of concern at the department but Hall said financial adjustments could change the current trend.
“We are looking forward to our next budget cycle so that we can go to the table and negotiate for higher pay so that we can be competitive with the Metroplex as it relates to our officers,” she said.
Hall said it’s going to take a multi-tiered effort to recruit more officers. The department has adopted a slogan called “Our Excellence Begins With You.”
“We’re asking every officer to be a recruiter. We’re asking every council person. Everyone to assist us in marketing this great city of Dallas,” said Hall.
Chief Hall said last year that she wanted to hire 250 officers within the next fiscal year.
