DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Dallas firefighter and a Southern Methodist University graduate are among 5 people killed in a helicopter crash in New York City over the weekend.

The helicopter went down in the East River around 7 p.m. on Sunday while en route to a private photo shoot.

26-year-old Brian McDaniel, a Dallas firefighter, and 26-year-old Trevor Cadigan, an SMU grad who is the son of the production manager at WFAA TV, have been confirmed dead.

Dallas Fire Rescue’s Jason Evans said McDaniel was assigned to the C-shift at Fire Station 36. He is survived by his parents and older brother of Denver, Colorado.

Evans said McDaniel will be missed.

“Despite his short tenure, hearts are heavy with grief as we not only try to come to grips with his loss departmentally; but to also be there in every way that we can for this family,” he said.

Cadigan had recently graduated from SMU and was in New York to begin a career with Business Insider, according to WFAA TV.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the Cadigan family during this difficult time.

The pilot of the helicopter was able to free himself after the crash and was rescued.
