COLLIN COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News) – As voters head to the polls today for the primary elections, all eyes will be on the race for the District 8 Senate seat; which Republican candidates Phillip Huffines and Angela Paxton are vying for.
It’s being billed as on of the most competitive elections in the state, with campaign costs approaching a combined $10 million, a record for a Texas state Senate race.
Angela Paxton, a longtime educator, is the wife of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Phillip Huffines, the former Dallas County Republican Party Chairman, is the twin brother of Don Huffines, a state senator out of Dallas.
Two Democrats, Brian Chaput and Mark Phariss, are on the primary ballot, but analysts say the district is solidly red and not expected to flip in November.
David Smith voted in Collin County early Tuesday morning and said he thinks this year’s elections could be a pivotal moment for the state.
“I think Republicans are trying to keep Texas Conservative. I think Democrats are trying to get a candidate where they can actually turn Texas,” he said.
Collin County Election Administrator Bruce Sherbet said it’s typical for 55 % of voters to cast their ballot early.
Smith said he hope’s the other 49% show up today to cast their ballots.
“It’s a big step regardless of any political affiliation you may have…this is going to represent you in the general election,” he said.
The polls close today at 7 p.m.
