FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Northwest Independent School District is crediting the quick thinking of two students that led the detainment of their classmate for allegedly possessing a handgun on campus.
According to a letter district Superintendent Ryder Warren sent to parents, two students alerted the administration after a photo of a classmate with a handgun was posted on a social media site Tuesday morning.
The district said they began investigating the allegations within three minutes of the report.
An administrator and a School Resource Officer located the accused student and took possession of the gun without incident.
During questioning, another classmate was implicated in the situation. The district is working with local police in the investigation.
In the letter, Warren stated that although he seldom goes public regarding discipline issues with students, this situation required a different approach.
“I rarely send messages regarding student discipline issues, but we are living in a different time right now, and I need you to be aware,” he wrote.
Warren stressed the need for the school community to work together to keep students safe and asked parents to make sure their kids know that the district has a security webpage that can link them to a district-wide anonymous tip line.
“Partnering with our parents and caregivers, we always hope to make impressions on students that would guide them to behave in manners that would prevent these things from happening, but we also must be ready to address these incidents when kids (allegedly) make very bad decisions,” wrote Warren.
The district is holding a Facebook Live discussion next Thursday, March 8, to discuss the safety and security of the students.
