ROCKWALL (WBAP/KLIF News) – A portion of a Rockwall neighborhood was evacuated because of high water Thursday afternoon.

Rockwall Police Sergeant Jeff Welch said the evacuations are affecting people who live in homes in the 500 to 700 block of Lakeside Drive near the shores of Rockwall Lake which is a separate body of water from Lake Ray Hubbard.

Welch said the water rose really quickly as rain continued to hammer the area all afternoon.

“This water probably came up between 30 to 45 minutes. Looking at some of that…some of that is three to four feet back there,” he said.

During this type of weather, Rockwall police routinely patrol the area to check for trouble spots.

“We start checking roads around the lake to see if they start flooding. To see if we need to shutdown any roads or to see if we need to send alerts to any residents,” he said.

As word of the evacuation spread, a local organization rallied around the residents whose homes were flooded.

“Between the city and Helping Hands, which is a local charitable organizations, we’re providing vouchers for them to stay in hotels tonight,” he said.

More rain is expected to fall overnight and throughout the weekend.
