CARROLLTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Creekview High School student was arrested Tuesday for falsely warning of a school shooting on social media.
The Carrollton Police Department said the student allegedly sent a Snapchat Message stating “Today’s the Day” along with a picture of someone dressed all in black holding a large red bag.
When the message recipient asked, “For what?” the student replied, “School Shooting” in bold letters.
The department’s Jolene DeVito said investigators and the school administration worked together to identify the suspect. The student admitted to sending the message as a joke.
Investigators ultimately deemed the threat not credible.
The student is charged with False Alarm of Report, which in this case is a state jail felony since it happened in a school.
The crime is punishable by six months up to two years in jail and an up to $10,000 fine.
Carrollton police said this case is an example of the need for students to understand that jokes referencing school shootings or other illegal threats are serious and will not be tolerated.
