Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – A hippopotamus calf born at the Dallas Zoo early Saturday morning did not survive. The calf was born, as hippo calves are, in a pool of water, and the new mother did not help her baby to the surface soon enough. The zoo’s official statement says the mother’s instincts didn’t kick in until it was too late, and there was no way any member of the zoo staff could have safely gone into that pool to help.
