At Least 17 Dead in South Florida High School Shooting

(CNN) – At least 17 people are dead after a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, law enforcement officials told CNN.
The suspect, a former student, was taken into custody “after he committed this horrific, homicidal, detestable act,” Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. Law enforcement sources told CNN that the suspect has been identified as Nikolas Cruz.
At least 14 people have been taken to area hospitals following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The shooting caused “numerous” fatalities, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said. He did not know the exact number.

PARKLAND, Fla. (WBAP/KLIF) -Deputies with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.  The exact number of injuries and causalities has not been determined, but the school’s superintendent Robert Runcie says he believes “there will be multiple fatalities.”

The shooting occurred around 2:00 o’clock Wednesday afternoon. Children, teachers and staff members were seen running from the school.

SWAT, police and deputies surrounded the school with their guns drawn as they guide students outside of the school to safety.

A student spoke to ABC News and told George Stephanopoulos “at least 3 people are dead outside my door.” He said he was evacuated from the school with other students.

The suspect is in custody.
