Plano Hosting First Ever Public Active Shooter Training

PLANO (WBAP/KLIF News) — The Plano Police Department is hosting its first ever public active shooter training Wednesday night.

The event is taking place at 6:30pm at the Plano Centre. Lieutenant Mica Lunt is with the Plano Police Department and says they decided to host the event because of chatter amongst the community.

“The chances of someone being involved in an active shooter event are really quite low, but it happens,” Lunt said. “As we’ve seen, it happens in Plano, and it happens in North Texas.”

The training session is the first one in Plano available to the public. The Police Department has hosted similar training sessions for businesses and faith-based organizations, but those were limited specifically to those groups.

Lunt said the concept being preached at the session will be similar to “Stop, Drop and Roll,” only instead, applied to a shooting and not a fire.

“What we want to do tonight is expose people to the idea of ‘Run, Hide, Fight,'” Lunt said. “So they know those strategies and how to apply those strategies.”

The event is free but has already filled up in terms of registration. However, Lunt said if you pre-register ahead of time, you may still reserve a spot if somebody ends up cancelling.
