(WBAP/KLIF) – The U.S. Postal Service has begun its annual program to ensure that letters sent to Santa Claus this Christmas season get answered.
USPS officials said that the Operation Santa Program allows the public to adopt letters to Santa written by low income children. Volunteers can adopt a child’s letter to Santa and mail gifts directly to the child who wrote him. Twana Barber with USPS said that letters aren’t just limited to children. She said one man sent a letter when he was down on his luck.
“He had cancer and wasn’t able to continue to work,” said Barber. “He just wanted to be able to give his family of four a Christmas.”
The program dates back to 1912, when the Postmaster General authorized postal service workers to respond to letters written to Santa Claus. Barber said that even in the day of email, Twitter and text messages, many children still hand write letters to the North Pole. Post offices across the country have received plenty of letter already, but are reminding the public that there is still time to send and answer Christmas letters.
