DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Southeast Dallas community is coming to the aid of a local charity that saw dozens of its donated Christmas gifts for needy children destroyed by a fire.
The 2-alarm blaze at the Asante Apartments Tuesday morning forced the cancellation of a charity event that was to be held by the Quest 4 Greater Success organization, which operates at the complex.
City of Dallas Council Member Tennell Atkins said after the fire, he and members of the community started working on a plan B for the kids.
“They was supposed to give out the toys and the kids said ‘hey, we’re not going to have a Christmas,”. So what I decided to do and the community decided to do is let everybody know what happened and find a central location for people to drop off toys,” he said.
In the last 24 hours, hundreds of toys including board games, footballs and dolls have been brought to the donation site.
Atkins said the response has been overwhelming.
“From Allen Texas from Fort Worth, people have come to drop off toys. It’s been great,” he said.
The toy drive will be held at the J.C. Turner Recreational Center at 6424 Elam Road throughout the week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Friday.
