Sunnyvale School District Cancel Classes Due to Widespread Flu-Like Illness

SUNNYVALE  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Sunnyvale School District has canceled classes until Thursday after a growing number of students were absent due to a flu-like illness.

Superintendent Doug Williams said the staff started to worry when 10 percent of students were out sick last week and the number increased to 12 percent Monday morning.

“We started noticing last week that we were having quite a few absences on campus, primarily our elementary campus,” he said.

Williams said officials agreed unanimously that it was in the best to take a proactive approach to the situation.

“We felt like it was in the best interest of student safety to shut down for a couple of days and get the buildings disinfected and give the kids a chance to rest up and come back on Thursday and see if we can resume regular operations, ” he said.

Classes resume on Thursday, December 14.

The district is advising parents to go to sunnyvaleisd.com for details.
