FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Fort Worth Police Department is hosting a gun buyback program over the weekend to help families get rid of extra guns they may not use anymore.
The department’s Brad Perez said they restarted the program this year and have had around 150 guns brought in.
“The majority of the people that bring guns to us have either inherited the guns or they’ve been around for a long time and they’re not sure if they’re safe anymore. They’re not sure if they’re broken,” he said.
Texas is a state known for a high population of residents that carry guns and who are strong supporters of gun rights. Perez said this program is not about taking anyone’s guns away, rather helping people be safer while cleaning out some clutter.
“They sometimes now have grandkids or great grandkids and it makes them uncomfortable to have these old guns laying around,” he said.
Police will not ask any questions about the guns and will give you a $50 Visa gift card for bringing one in.
It takes place Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church off Houston Street.
