DPA Stands With Indicted Dallas Police Officers

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas Police Association has released a statement regarding the indictment of three Dallas police officers by a Dallas County grand jury.

“The Dallas Police Association stands behind the actions of the three decorated officers who were unjustly indicted by a grand jury earlier this week,” DPA President, Mike Mata said.

The Officers were each indicted on one count of misdemeanor Deadly Conduct. It’s reported that the Officer’s mocked Tony Timpa in August 2016 after he called Police while high on cocaine and then ran into a street.

According to the DPA, on the night of August 10, the officers were called to the scene on W. Mockingbird Lane and immediately requested an ambulance. When the officers arrived, Mr. Timpa had already been handcuffed and restrained by security officers because he had been screaming and running in the roadway.

“Mr. Timpa had ingested cocaine and was reportedly schizophrenic and off his medication,” said Mata. “Because Mr. Timpa was combative with officers and attempting to run back into the roadway, officers had to restrain him while medical personnel arrived and began treatment. The medical examiner determined that Mr. Timpa’s death was the result of his illicit drug use and the stress associated with physical restraint.”

Mata said that prior to this weeks’ action by a grand jury, the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, as well as the Internal Affairs Division, thoroughly investigated the officers’ actions, including consultation with experts in the fields of medicine and use of force, and found no wrongdoing on the part of the officers.

“Specifically, the experts concluded that the physical restraint of Mr. Timpa was reasonable and consistent with their training,” Mata said.

The DPA said that the type of physical restraint used on Mr. Timpa is commonly used by officers to control combative and intoxicated individuals, and that it expects the officers to be cleared of the charges.
