McLennan County suing opioid manufacturing and distribution companies

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Commissioners in McLennan County have filed suit against the country’s largest opioid manufacturers and wholesale distributors.

According to the Waco Tribune-Herald the rate of prescription opioid distribution is higher in the county than state and national averages. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports for every 100 people in McLennan County 77% were given opioid prescriptions in 2015. Statewide the average is 59.8% while the national average was 70.6%.

McLennan County Judge Scott Felton said, “The commissioners want to be leaders in this fight against an epidemic that has affected McLennan County citizens of all races and socio-economic groups.”

Attorney Craig D. Cherry with the law firm of Haley & Olson P.C. said the lawsuit, filed against a long list of defendants, could take years to resolve.
