GRAPEVINE (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Grapevine Police Department is asking the public to help catch a thief who’s been stealing wallets out of womens’ purses at La Madeleine restaurants across the Metroplex.
The suspect hit locations in Grapevine, Plano and Irving on August 18th and 21st.
The department’s Amanda McNew said investigators think the thief targeted the restaurant because many women hang their bags on the back of the chairs there which she said is an open invitation for thieves.
“The wallets were pulled from their purses when they didn’t even know it was happening because their backs were turned and within the next hour or so the cards from them are being used at other stores while they’re still in the restaurant,” she said.
Investigators said the stolen debit or credit cards were used for high-end purchases of electronics or handbags in Frisco, Irving and Southlake.
Video from the surveillance video above was taken at a Best Buy in Irving on August 24th.
McNew said women need to be cautious with their belongings when they’re dining at restaurants.
“Purses should either be visible to them or between their feet somewhere where someone else can’t grab it. You can also buy purse hangers at the store with a little magnetic clip and they hang from the tables,” she said.
Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call Grapevine Police at 817-410-8127.
