Wesley Mathews on Suicide Watch; Attorneys say Sini Mathews Is Innocent in Sherin’s Death

RICHARDSON  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The adoptive father of the 3-year-old girl who went missing weeks ago is now on suicide watch and in protective custody in the Dallas County Jail, a common practice with high profile cases.

Wesley Mathews was transferred to the Dallas County Jail from Richardson on Wednesday. He faces a charge of felony injury to a child in the death of Sherin Mathews, but police say that charge could be upgraded.

Meanwhile, Attorneys for Sini Mathews, the adoptive mother of three-year-old Sherin Mathews, released a statement on Wednesday regarding their client’s innocence in the toddler’s death.

Mitchell R. Nolte and Greg Gibbs with Gibbs Nolte Robison Rose stated that Sini Mathews had been cooperating with the Richardson Police Department since the investigation started October 7th, when Sherin was first reported missing.

According to the statement, Sini Mathews spoke with investigators at length at her home and then went to police department for further talks.

“She voluntarily went to back to the station a few days later, and was interrogated for hours by several officers with no attorney present,” it said.

The attorney said that their client had nothing to do with Sherin’s death and that Wesley Mathews’ recent confession and arrest supports her claim of innocence.

“Now that Mr. Mathews has turned himself into police and told them what happened to Sherin, we see no need for Mrs. Mathews to endure further police interrogation. She had nothing to do with Sherin’s death or the removal of her body from the home,” it said.

The statement ended with details into Sini Mathews current state of mind.

“Mrs. Mathews is trying to grieve for her lost daughter while still caring for her remaining daughter. She is struggling to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. This will require her full focus and attention and therefore we will conduct any interviews or release any further information at this time” it said.

Sherin’s body was found Sunday afternoon in a culvert less than a mile from her home.

Welsey Mathews was arrested on Monday on an injury to a child charge after he changed his story to police. He told investigators that she choked on her milk and stopped breathing.

Mathews had originally told police that Sherin disappeared after he put her outside as punishment for not drinking her milk.

He then admitted to removing her body from the home.  His bond has been set at $1 million.
