GARLAND (WBAP/KLIF News) – Garland Police arrested the person believed to have shot and killed a teenager at a Garland Park.
Garland Police Lieutenant Pedro Barineau said 17 year-old Scott Litton is charged with murder in the death of 15-year-old Miguel Esquivel.
Investigators said on Friday, October 20, an altercation spiraled out of control at Embree Park on Dairy Road near Alto Drive.
“It seems that there was a fight that had broken out between two people but there was two large groups there. There was a group from Garland and a group from Dallas. One person pulled out a gun, the suspect Mr. Litton, and began shooting into the crowd and that’s when he struck the victim,” said Barineau.
Esquivel was shot in the head and taken to Baylor Hospital in Garland, where he later died.
Barineau said investigators don’t think Esquivel was the target.
“We don’t believe he was intentionally trying to kill this specific person. However, he was intent on shooting at people,” he said.
Litton voluntarily turned himself in and was arrested after speaking with detectives.
“Based on the interview with the detectives, he gave information that he was the person that pulled the gun out and he did shoot,” said Barineau.
Litton is charged with murder and is being held at the Garland Detention Center on $500,000 bond.
The Garland Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
