Irving-Based Company Wins a Huge Contract to Help Restore Power to Puerto Rico

Irving (WBAP/KLIF) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded an Irving-based engineering and construction company, Fluor, a $240 million contract to help restore electricity to Puerto Rico. About 86% of that island is still without power a month after the onslaught of Hurricane Maria. The best guess is it will take six months to a year to completely restore power to some areas. Exactly what Fluor is going to do for that $240 million isn’t exactly clear. FEMA’s official news release says only that Fluor will “augment current restoration activities.” Fluor does have history in Puerto Rico . It was a contractor on Puerto Rico’s first oil refinery that opened in 1955. It also did the engineering and construction of a coal-fired power plant that was providing 17% percent of Puerto Rico’s electricity before Hurricane Maria hit.
