IRVING (WBAP/KLIF) – The Boy Scouts of America’s Board of Directors has unanimously agreed to welcome girls into the Cub Scout program and to forge a path for older girls to pursue and earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout.
Chief Scout Executive for the Irving based company, Mike Surbaugh says “there are tremendous programs out there that provide services in a co-ed environment like 4-H, and Camp Fire, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club. There’s also single gender organizations that focus in that way. What our parents have said is that their daughters/girls we know are interested in the types of programs we offer in Cub scouting and Boy scouting.”
But the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, Jennifer Barkowsi says “we have provided a safe single gender environment for girls and have for over a century and we believe that the best place for girls to learn leadership skills is at Girl Scouts.’
The changes will go into effect in 2019.
