Threatening Voicemail Messages Left for Dallas City Council Member

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A Dallas City Council member is receiving threats and angry messages after voting to remove the Robert E. Lee statue from Lee Park.

Dallas Police have investigated several voice mail messages left on Jennifer Staubach-Gates’ office phone. Gates said that threats and negative feedback come with the job, but said she has never received a response of this magnitude.

“We’re local politicians,” said Gates. “We don’t usually get attention from people outside of Dallas and a lot of these calls have been from outside the Dallas area code.”

Gates said she’s always open to hearing opinions from the people of Dallas, especially people from her district.

“You’re accountable for your decision making and I am more than happy to discuss it with groups from my district,” said Gates.

A political advertisement was purchased and aired on Dallas radio stations after the statue was taken down attacking Gates for her decision to vote in favor of its removal. City Councilman Dwaine Caraway said that other council members have received threats and angry letters about the council’s decision on the statue.
