DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — The president of the University of North Texas in Denton is trying to stop Donald Trump Jr. from speaking at the campus this month. The Dallas Morning News quotes Neal Smatresk from an email sent to a professor who opposes Trump’s appearance, “I am trying to stop it but it isn’t an easy thing.”
87 faculty members sent an open letter to the university asking that the speaking invitation be withdrawn. The letter said an appearance by the son of U.S. President Donald J. Trump would be disrespectful to women, people of color and the LGBT community. The letter also refers to the ongoing federal investigation of a June 2016 meeting with Russians who claimed to have information damaging to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Trump Jr., Executive Vice President of the Trump Organization, will receive $100,000 for the speech, October 24, paid by a tax advisory firm owned by Brint Ryan, who heads the school’s board of regents.
