HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Houston hopes to remove debris from Hurricane Harvey within 3 months and the state of Texas has given them the support to be able to accomplish that goal.
Governor Greg Abbott has given Houston $50 million from the state’s “Disaster Relief Fund”.
“This is what the state of Texas is for and what we can do. We are here to help you and help you rebuild because we are one team together,” said Abbott.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner had asked the Governor to pull money from the state’s “Rainy Day Fund” but Abbott said FEMA will pay for most of the cleanup and using the fund now would leave it empty.
“Every mayor in the effected region, every judge in the effected region are going through the process of calculating what their costs are,” he said.
Turner thanked Abbott for providing funding so quickly.
“We’ve been working together over the years…decades…and Texans do what they do. So, I appreciate what has taken place today,” he said.
Abbott said no one can predict Houston’s long-term needs and that he would call a special session if necessary.
Hurricane Harvey claimed the lives of at least 83 people and caused tens of millions of dollars in damage.
