Attorney General Ken Paxton Now Accepting Sanctuary City Complaints

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – A day after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit allowed Texas to enforce portions of its “sanctuary cities” law, Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on Tuesday that his office is now accepting complaints.

Paxton said that Senate Bill 4 allows his office to pursue civil penalties against or remove from office local entities and officials who fail to comply with the enforcement of federal immigration laws and detainers.

The law also makes the refusal to comply with federal immigration detainers a misdemeanor.

Paxton said the victory is important for the safety of Texas communities.

“The 5th Circuit quickly confirmed what my office and I long maintained: Senate Bill 4 is a common sense measure that prevents governments in Texas from standing in the way of federal enforcement of immigration law,” Attorney General Paxton said. “By enforcing the key provisions of SB 4, we will prevent dangerous criminals from being released back into our Texas communities.”

His office said the law allows Paxton to begin receiving complaints from residents who live in the city of the local entity that they’re accusing of violating anti-sanctuary or detainer provisions.

The complaints must include sworn statements about the facts within the allegations.
