DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Rescue efforts are still underway in Mexico City after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Tuesday afternoon, killing over 230 people.
In the DFW Metroplex, people are doing what they can to help those affected by the earthquake.
Maria Hernandez, a west Dallas resident, was in Mexico City for her mother’s funeral and left the day before the earthquake hit. She said she wants to do as much as she can to help people in need.
“I just got back. My mother just passed away and now we’re looking forward to get my kids to help out. Now, we’re going to do a fundraiser like sell tamales and good food to help out,” she said.
The earthquake leveled at least 44 buildings, including a primary school where 21 students and four teachers were killed.
Hernandez said she wants to focus on the children.
“The kids need a lot of help with clothes and support. You know, like mental and therapy support. That’s another way I am looking forward to support my community,” she said.
So far, 52 people have been rescued in Mexico City alone. Officials are expecting the death toll to continue to rise.
