DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Dallas city councilman is concerned about money and safety because of the number of Dallas police officers who will work the State Fair of Texas when it opens later this month.
Scott Griggs said the department is low on officers and neighborhoods will be at risk by putting officers on fair grounds.
“A great number of these officers are on-duty officers who are reassigned from various patrol divisions around the city. I’m concerned about crimes in our neighborhoods. The fair is going to be the safest place to be,” he said.
Griggs said the fair itself is only paying a portion of the $3 million it will cost for police.
“This is despite the State Fair of Texas having gross receipts of $56 million last year and 2.4 million visitors. Top executives of the State Fair of Texas make over $700,000 a year,” he said.
Griggs said if the fair paid more money, officers would be able to work overtime and better patrol neighborhoods.
The city council recently voted 8-7 not to ask the fair to pay more than $1 million for security.
