The Southern Baptists of Texas Convention Collecting “Care Buckets” for Harvey Victims

DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Southern Baptists of Texas Convention is collecting five-gallon “care buckets” for the victims of Tropical Storm Harvey.

Each bucket will contain items such as hygiene materials, a respirator and first-aid kit. The Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church’s Pastor Terry Turner is encouraging everyone to donate.

He said he knows first hand what surviving a flood is like.

“If you’ve ever been in a flood and I have been in a flood before, it’s a blessing when people come along and say we’re here to help you get through it’ and they bring items. When you have no clothes a shirt makes a difference,” said Turner.

The items that are needed are things that most people don’t think twice about but Turner said donating them is a simple gesture with a powerful impact.

“This is an opportunity first of all for us to be pleasing in the sight of God. On the second hand, it would be an opportunity for them to be a blessing to people who are really, really hurting. Those who have lost the people closest to them and lost all of their items,” he said.

Turner said experiencing a flood is something he hopes people will never have to go through but he hopes everyone can experience the act of giving to a stranger in need.

The Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church is one of the drive’s drop off points and the buckets will be distributed as early as September 5th.

“We’re going to rent an 18-wheeler or a U-Haul truck and deliver it to those people as soon as we possibly can,” said Turner.
