Some North Texas Gas Stations Are Running Low on Fuel in Tropical Storm Harvey’s Wake

NORTH TEXAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Some gas stations across North Texas are experiencing a fuel shortage in the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey.

AAA’s Daniel Armbruster said technically there isn’t a shortage of supply, it’s just that crews aren’t able to gain access to the reserves along the coast.

“The refineries are off line. There’s plenty of supply. It’s just that right now while they’re shut down no one can get to them. In Corpus Christi, market analyst are anticipating that they will come back online this weekend,” he said.

Customers line up for gas in Richardson amid fears of fuel shortages.

Armbruster said it’s too early to tell when things will return to normal.

“You know in the Houston area, it’s still unclear when refinery damage will be assessed. Of course, the local roads still have to be cleared and deemed safe by first responders. Beyond Houston, it’s also still to early to soon to see how badly damaged energy infrastructure is from the storm,” he said.

Armbruster said drivers should expect to see a dramatic yet brief increase in gas prices due to Harvey and plan their routes ahead of time to avoid running out of gas.

Analysts have speculated that the storm could lead to price increases around 20 to 80 cents a gallon, which is higher than the spikes after Hurricane Katrina.
