Corpus Christi (WBAP/KLIF News/CNN) — President Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott praised their staffs and projected an upbeat tone at the start of their briefing on Hurricane Harvey in Corpus Christi Tuesday afternoon.
“This is really my honor,” said Trump as he called Texas a “special place” that will come back from the catastrophic flooding.
Trump said “we have had a tremendous group of folks” working on recovery efforts — including Brock Long of FEMA, who he said “has become very famous on television.” “It’s a real team and we want to do it better than ever before,” Trump proclaimed.
During the meeting, Governor Abbott wanted everyone to know how the Trump administration had been handling the disaster.
“About 10 days in advance of the hurricane even coming in to the Corpus Christi area, members of the President’s cabinet and the President himself were in contact with me and my office pre-preparing for the catastrophe that was coming our way,” he said.
Before Trump arrived, Abbott said it was important for Trump to see the disaster up close.
“We want him to see and understand the enormous challenge that Texans have faced and the need for the aid that he has provided,” he said.
President Trump will also stop in Austin, where he will meet with state leaders and tour the Texas Emergency Operations Center.
The administration said the President will not stop in Houston because the area is considered too dangerous and Trump does not want to disrupt the emergency responses to the area.
