Houston Police Officer Killed During Tropical Storm Harvey Response

Sgt. Steve Perez

HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Houston Police Department is mourning one of their own after a veteran officer drowned in the floodwaters from Tropical Storm Harvey that left him trapped inside his squad car.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner confirmed the death of Sergeant Steve Perez on Tuesday.

Turner tweeted that Perez had driven two-and-a-half hours looking for a safe way to get to work to help flood victims early Sunday morning and said the 30-year veteran of the department should be remembered as a hero.

Perez’ death brought the death toll from Tropical Storm Harvey to 15.

The storm also claimed the lives of a family of six, who drowned Sunday afternoon while attempting to escape the flood.

Officials said they’re expecting the death toll to rise as forecasters predict Harvey to bring even more rain over the next few days.

The National Weather Service said Harvey produced a record 49 inches of rain since it made landfall last Friday.
