HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Hundreds of people filled a church in Houston on Wednesday to remember former Governor Mark White, who died last weekend at the age of 77.

White was a democrat but former Governor and President George W. Bush, speaking at the funeral, said White refused to accept mediocrity and insisted on high expectations.

“Mark was recently quoted ‘I never give up on this state on this country’…that is what you learn after being in politics as long as I have,” he said.

Bush said White had a vision that included every Texan regardless of political party.

“Mark visited me several times in the capitol and on every visit he made sure to tell me how much he valued his time as Governor. He could rumble with the best and then always extend a hand in friendship,” he said.

White’s son Andrew gave an emotional yet lighthearted speech and described his father as the life of the party.

“As a matter of fact, he would have loved this funeral. I know one of his biggest regrets was dying and not to be able to attend this funeral. Pardon the expression but it’s probably killing him right now not to be able to be here,” he said.

White served as governor from 1983 to 1987. During his tenure, he set limits on elementary class sizes and set statewide testing standards.

Energy Secretary and former Governor Rick Perry and current Governor Greg Abbott also attended the service.
