DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A project that has caused debate in the City of Dallas for years has been rejected by vote of the Dallas City Council.
The Trinity River Toll Road project, known as Trinity Parkway, was killed by a 13-2 vote.
“We’ve seen lots and lots of business leaders in this community and community leaders think about this project, learn the facts, and change their positions,” said City Council Member Phillip Kingston. “That’s one of the most mature, adult things a leader can do.”
The majority of the City Council said the specifics of the project were too big, too expensive, and wouldn’t be an effective way to boost the economy in South Dallas, as intended. Council Member Tennell Atkins said there is still a need for a source that would build economic growth.
“We do have a problem trying to get to a part of the city that needs economic development,” said Atkins. “I believe that if you have infrastructure, you build commerce.”
A crowd present at the council meeting applauded the vote to kill the project.
