Homeless Tent City Closed in Downtown Dallas

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – More than 70 homeless people in Dallas are being forced to relocate from an encampment under Interstate 30 near Fair Park.
The area is being fenced off Tuesday and Wednesday.  Dave Hogan, Manager of The Dallas Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Unit, says the idea is to encourage homeless to move off of the streets.

“We want to shut down the whole encampment institution because a lot of times they move from encampment to encampment,” said Hogan. “We’re trying to get these people off of the streets and into housing, mental health and substance abuse treatment.”
Coby Young is homeless and says the shut down could be a good thing for some people.

“Hopefully some of us will wake up from the shake up,” said Young. “You get tired of moving the tent around and the hassle and realize what the hell am I really doing?”

Hazmat crews were brought in to clean up human waste, vermin, and hazardous material.
