DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Following the deaths of 10 people in San Antonio, truckers believe that it’s likely the illegal immigrants were picked up north of border checkpoints.
According to San Antonio Police, a semi-truck parked outside of a Wal-Mart was found with nearly 40 people in the back being smuggled into Texas. More than thirty people were hospitalized for heat stroke and dehydration. Police say a surveillance video at the Wal-Mart showed cars coming by to pick up the people from the 18-wheeler. The driver of the truck was arrested.
Trucker, Ben from McAllen called The Chris Salcedo Show on our sister station WBAP Monday and said that border security in South Texas is very tight.
“To have that many people in that trailer from the border on up is impossible these days,” Ben said. “They went with the coyote to a holding place, went from the holding place to the truck on this side of the border and then went north.”
Shawn from Rockwall is a trucker and told Salcedo that avoiding checkpoints would be difficult.
“At every border location we go through you have to go through an immigration check point,” Shawn said. Anywhere between 35 and sometimes 40 miles in whatever direction your’e going you have to go through a check point.”
Some truckers did acknowledge that it’s not easy, but possible to go around checkpoints.
