Texas school board approves punishing students by paddling

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — A school board in South Texas has taken a controversial step in approving an old school cure for misbehaving students: paddling.

Corporal punishment is legal in Texas though not widely accepted or utilized. Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year the policy will be in place for the Three Rivers Independent School District, midway between San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

The board did make allowances for parents to opt out. Superintendent Mary Springs told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, “If the parent is not comfortable with it, that’s the end of the discussion.”

The Texas Classroom Teachers Association defines corporal punishment as “deliberate infliction of physical pain by hitting, paddling, spanking, slapping or any other physical force used as a means of discipline.”
