Abbott calls property tax relief a top priority for special session

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – Cutting property taxes in Texas is a top priority for Governor Greg Abbott in the special session getting underway Tuesday in Austin.

That is one of several items up for debate during the 30-day meeting of lawmakers.

“Texas has one of the highest property tax rates across the United States and in fact we are up there with our friend Illinois,” said Abbott. “That is an area we do not want to be in.”

Abbott told the Texas Public Policy Foundation he has heard stories about people literally being taxed out of their homes because of rising taxes.

He says it seems like appraisers own the homes and that it must stop.
